Why cholesterol matters — what is the norm for?

LDL and HDL cholesterol
Before looking at the table, you need to know which cholesterol is bad (LDL — to be lowered) and which is good (HDL — to be raised). Total cholesterol is, of course, the sum of LDL and HDL. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the bad cholesterol; too much indicates growing circulatory problems and rising risk. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is the good cholesterol — easy to remember: low is bad, high is good. HDL helps destroy LDL, so more good cholesterol reduces risk.
