What is vitexin

Vitexin is a natural substance and antioxidant, classified as an apigenin flavone glycoside. This flavonoid is found in quite a few plants: bamboo leaves, passionflower, lavender, mung beans and many more — though (apart from buckwheat) it is not very common in everyday Western cuisine. Vitexin has been used as a medicine across all continents since ancient times.1 Placed under the scientists' magnifying glass, this flavonoid genuinely surprised researchers with its very broad pharmacological effect.
What are the health benefits of vitexin?
Vitexin is studied for a range of effects: an excellent antioxidant (protecting cells from oxidants, thereby slowing ageing);3 an impressive effect on the brain (examined separately below); reducing inflammation in the body (calming the immune system);4 protecting the heart and circulation;5 helping regulate blood glucose;6 and a studied role in cancer, mainly by encouraging cancer cells toward apoptosis and through the autophagy (cellular clean-up) mechanism.8
Vitexin protects the brain

Neurological disorders — including seizures (epilepsy), depression, memory loss and slowed movement (bradykinesia) — are closely linked to neuron loss, reduced stress resistance and inflammation. Vitexin is studied for improving learning and memory and for helping against neurological disorders by prolonging neuron survival, reducing the number of oxidants (ROS) and easing inflammation.13 The brain and neurons are especially sensitive to oxidative stress, and vitexin is studied as a protector against this damage.
Vitexin, neurotransmitters and psychological state
Now to the effect that interests us most. According to research, this natural substance is studied as reducing anxiety no less effectively than chemical drugs31 — because it activates the same benzodiazepine receptors in the brain34 as anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications (benzodiazepines send the brain the signal "you are safe, there is no danger"). But it does so without the serious side effects typical of prescription anxiety drugs. Vitexin is also studied for its role in regulating serotonin (the well-being neurotransmitter), dopamine and acetylcholine. The effect appears more slowly (over weeks, not minutes), but without dependence and without impairing memory or movement coordination.

Hericium erinaceus is a medicinal mushroom of especially rare effect, titled the "brain mushroom." Its extract is studied as particularly suited to use alongside vitexin, because it is studied for stimulating nerve growth factor (NGF) — in human neuron samples, this mushroom's extract effectively increased neurite outgrowth by 60.6%.51 New myelin (the protective nerve layer) forms,52 and nerves are studied for recovery after neuron injury.53 In simple terms, this mushroom is studied for prompting the brain to renew itself — pairing the structural side with vitexin's receptor-level action.
